Movies for the Geeks

Weekend is coming. Howdy geeky or anyone who might want to plunge into some hacking, programming, sci-fi, gamer and social media addict you might want to check these list of movies I’ve already watched.

1. War Games (1983)

wargames

Matthew Broderick is a young wise-guy who nearly destroys the whole world when he tries to show off his hacking skills by gaining access to unreleased computer games. We’ve all been stuck in that situation once or twice, right?

2. The Social Network (2010)The-Social-Network-movie-poster

The critics will say that the movie defined a generation, maybe it will.  And maybe movies will go on to treat that same generation with a little more respect and smarts.  I know I’m not the only one who feels embarrassed when the adult says “Internet” in a movie.  The Social Network is for people who like smart and entertaining films.  Please don’t stick your nose up at this movie “about facebook”; it’s going to surprise you.  This is engrossing, immersive storytelling at its best

3. Hackers (1995)

Hackers-Movie

The movie, which stars Angelina Jolie, is about a group of hackers framed for a conspiracy involving embezzlement and a red herring computer virus. This classic pits a young Angelina Jolie and her Anonymous-like crew of hackers against an evil genius known as “The Plague.” Can you say ‘battle of the century’?

4. Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999)

A bio-pic about the early friendship, and heated rivalry, of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. I believe New York magazine said it best when they described this film as a “hoot.”

5. Antitrust (2001)

An open source favorite, for sure! Antitrust follows a young programmer who abandons his friends for a dream job at a huge software company, which is run by a eerily Bill Gates-like dictator.

6. Source Code (2011)

“Source Code” is an ingenious thriller that comes billed as science fiction, although its science is preposterous.

7. Office Space (1999)

Office Space 1

While you may think of it as more of a goofy comedy than a hacker movie, the plot of Office Space does revolve around co-workers who use their knowledge of programming to rebel against the company they hate. Who among us hasn’t day-dreamed about doing the same?

Download links aren’t available but you can ask my Uncle Google for suggested links where to download. Will update this post once I find new and interesting geeky movies.
